In 2012 I was a careerist soldier climbing the ranks and extremely fit. I competed in triathlons, road races, and obstacle races. During a race I shattered my left ankle and fractured both my tibia and fibula. After multiple surgeries and some permanent hardware installed, I was told my time in the Army was done. I was told I might never walk again without the assistance of a cane. I was so depressed I thought literally my life as I knew it was over. It was not. I found alternate means of exercise. I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu reaching the rank of purple belt. I rehabilitated myself back to being an athlete and soldier. I went to Master Fitness School and was certified as a Personal Trainer in 2016. I have since competed at the highest level as a Jiu Jitsu athlete to include IBJJF Worlds in 2017 and 2018. I have run distance races to include half marathons, multiple Ragnars, and Tough Mudders. I firmly believe there is no such thing as “Can’t.” I feel so strongly about it that I started my own personal training business so I could share the knowledge I gained with others. I want to empower others so they can share in the benefits I have from balanced physical training.
The greatest strength you need in life is the strength to carry yourself. While I have all the knowledge to sculpt your physique and shrink your waistline it's not your exterior image that matters to me the most. My approach to functional fitness focuses on strength training that is simple and safe for almost anyone. It will strengthen you for daily life and prepare your body to work efficiently as a unit. Whatever your personal goals I can give you the balanced training to help you achieve them.
As a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 8 years I can tell you that no life activity or sport I have ever tried has benefited my fitness and overall health as much as Jiu Jitsu . While many people begin practicing Jiu Jitsu for self Defense the benefits go far beyond that. Often referred to as human chess; Jiu Jitsu's ground based movements play expertly into functional fitness. These early developmental movements of rolling and crawling and the use of other foundational postures including lying being on all fours and kneeling have all come to be synonymous with functional training. Jiu Jitsu boasts many physical benefits such as flexibility, speed, strength, and coordination. On top of these you also have the mental benefits of increased self esteem and self awareness. We are discovering the importance of engaging the brain in the training process the more we engage it the better our results are. All these reasons are why I not only promote and offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at my gym but view it as possibly one of the most advanced functional training systems on the planet.
Each person entering the studio must confirm the following checklist items before entering
1) No symptoms of COVID-19 within the last 14 days. Check for these symptoms:
● Fever
● Cough
● Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
● Chills
● Repeated shaking with chills
● Muscle pain
● Headache
● Sore throat
● New loss of taste or smell
2) No known contacts with anyone testing positive for COVID-19 within the past 14 days. (Note that ALL healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients would fail this test.)
3) Has complied with the following social distancing guidelines for the last 14 days:
● Staying at least 6 feet away from others during shopping at the grocery store or pharmacy
● Wearing a cloth mask covering the nose and mouth when out in public
● Avoiding large gatherings in private places and public spaces, such as a friend’s house, parks,
restaurants, shops, or any other place, in accordance with current guidelines as set forth by the
● Working from home when possible
4) Is neither a member of, nor lives with, a member of a population uniquely vulnerable to COVID-19
including:
● People 65 years and older
● People who live in a nursing home or long-term care facility
And people of all ages with the following medical conditions:
● Chronic lung disease (i.e. chronic bronchitis, emphysema, moderate to severe asthma, pulmonary
fibrosis, cystic fibrosis),
● Serious heart conditions (i.e. congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, poorly controlled
high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease, history of blood clots in the limbs),
● Immunocompromised states (i.e. transplant recipients, persons being treated for cancer, and
anyone taking any medication known to suppress the immune system),
● Severe obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 40 or higher),
● Diabetes,
● Chronic kidney disease, and
● Chronic liver disease
Please help us keep the studio clean carefully consider the following:
· Masks and physical distancing are encouraged to the extent possible as determined by the Head Instructor. Have your face mask/covering with you at all training sessions. Necessity for use will be determined by the head instructor at each class.
· Leave shoes and outdoor clothing in the waiting area. Have a pair of sandals/flip flops or indoor shoes available that you can wear into the restroom
· Bring your own water bottle
· Attend to personal hygiene before you come to class. Come to class with a
clean uniform, clean personal gear and a clean body
· Upon entering the school, please wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer. Bring your own hand sanitizer.
· The mat will be cleaned, both before and after class, with the disinfectant solution and a mop.
· You should consider strengthening your immune system by increasing your intake of vitamins C and D and Zinc. This can be done by enhancing your diet, getting more sunshine, or taking supplements.
· Students over 65 and/or with any underlying heath conditions should carefully consider their attendance at class.
· The air will be circulated and refreshed to the maximum extent practical.
· If you have any symptoms of a cold or flu, you should not attend class.
· The bathroom and changing area will be available for those who choose to use them.
If you are not comfortable with any of the above, you should carefully consider your attendance at class.
